    Influence

    August 10, 2019

We hear so much about influence. Our family, society, media, politicians; all these things shape our lives. But Jesus is supposed to be our major influence once we turn to him.

Jesus has much to say about influence. He insists that we take up our crosses daily and follow him.

I think that means we are to die to self-interest every day. We are to follow His example and become servers of others, loving them and forgiving them even when they mistreat and persecute us.

This is easier said than done. Our self-centeredness is not easily laid down. But like the farmer who built bigger barns in anticipation of a greater future harvest, we might be called home tonight.

Will we be remembered for our wealth or for our selfless serving hearts?

"Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”' "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’  Luke 12: 18-20

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit it a man if he gains the whole world but forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?"  Matthew 16: 24-26
