“Do you have a mute God who doesn’t speak? That’s not who the Bible explains God to be!” Pastor Britt Merrick was talking about the Holy Spirit and I had to stop for a moment and think. Does the God I follow speak to me?
Jesus told his disciples he would send a comforter after he ascended into heaven. They were told not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait. And then during the festival of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon this ragtag group and the Christian church was born.
The Holy Spirit is the Comforter Jesus spoke about. Among other things, the Holy Spirit speaks to us as the voice of God. We might think of the Holy Spirit as the utility player on God’s team. Old H.S. can play every position on the field, even that of the coach.
Just the other night I uttered a brief prayer asking God to clarify my calling here in Australia. I didn’t expect an immediate reply but early the next morning while reading my Bible commentary He spoke these words through the printed page:
“Don’t let the size of a task or the length of time needed to accomplish it keep you from doing it. With God’s help, it can be done. Following through after a project is complete is as vital as doing the project itself."
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away the Comforter will not come to you; but if I depart I will send him to you. John 16: 7
