Six men are seated in a tight circle. We’re on a lesson called Hope. Each of us has lived long and full lives, the full catastrophe as Zorba the Greek would say. We observe the rules. We are not there to fix one another, only to listen and acknowledge when someone’s   sharing is finished.

I have learned a great lesson tonight by simply listening to the men. It seems God has things for all of us to do that will improve our lives. But our Lord is the God of the “still small voice.” He will not force himself upon us.

And even though his voice in our lives may be subtle it is nevertheless a command. It may even be a command as direct as the one Elijah received one dark and stormy night upon Mount Sinai. If we submit to God’s direction he will lead his armies to victory on our behalf. If we don’t we’re on our own. It’s as simple as that. He loves us just as much but lets us go our own dangerous way until we surrender to his will.

And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. 1 Kings 19: 12-13.

And his servant said to him, “Alas my master what shall we do? So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord I pray open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man and he saw. And behold the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 2 Kings 6: 15-17.

Receiving the full benefits of God's plan for our lives requires us to receive and obey God's commands fully. Life Application Study Bible.
