Is yes better than no? It depends. I say yes to many things I shouldn’t and vice versa. How can I keep it all straight?
The Spirit of the Lord brings wisdom and understanding and can help us with our choices. The Holy Spirit will never let us down. He works through our conscience to tell us when we’re doing well and when we’re blowing it. That inner voice becomes very clear the more we follow its instructions.
It’s no mystery that once we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit our powers of discernment become sharper. As Britt Merrick says, with trial and error, we become more attuned to God’s direction for our lives. Spirit's direction produces the fruit of the spirit.
Countless times I’ve been ready to say no to someone’s request only to have the Holy Spirit guide me in the opposite direction. Saying yes feels good, especially with the power of the Spirit behind it.
As we practice the virtues of kindness, patience, tolerance, compassion, sensitivity long-suffering and self-control we can say yes to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
But also for this reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self control, to self control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1: 5-8
